The Truth About Feedback

The Truth About Feedback

Feedback is extremely valuable. It’s how you grow and reach your goals. But sometimes it can really sting! How do you grow through feedback without hurting your feelings? My best advice is to regularly ask for feedback from trusted instructors and mentors so you can process it in a safe space.

You won’t always get to control how you receive feedback. By soliciting feedback deliberately, when situations arise where you get feedback out in the world, you’re already familiar with how to use people’s words to help you grow instead of letting less than glowing reviews bringing you down.

In the past, bitter feedback would have wounded me. Saying “it’s not about you, it’s totally about them” only goes so far and it doesn’t give you any insight into the issue at hand. I’ve flipped the script and process it differently now.

I’d love to tell you an incident that happened last week…

So, I was teaching class, slammin’ it with seamless corrections, breakdowns and build ups while staying with the music – was feeling like a true bad ass. Then I glanced over to my left and then….

BAM!

The new girl ran off in a huff. There was a sudden heaviness in my heart.

I heard from another member that she complained about me in the locker room saying that I was correcting her way too much and felt almost “made fun of”.

Ouch! It stung a little.

I’m sure this complaint was backed by insecurity and other issues, BUT I can learn from it! It made me think about how I taught the class from the perspective of a brand new student.

The class was only shorter than usual so my corrections and cues were very succinct and direct in order for them to be effective. Now that it was pointed out, I can totally understand that a new student who does not know my style can take this as being abrasive.

The most important thing for me as a SharQui teacher is to create a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone feels like they’re making fast friends. Now when my new session starts, I know I will be more successful if I really go out if my way to be warm, supportive, and attentive to brand new students.

The truth smack is that if you are coachable the sky is the limit. If you can’t take correction, you can’t grow. Life is more enjoyable when you grow, so embrace learning.

As instructors we always need to keep things fresh by giving our clients our best. The best place to get constructive feedback is from experts you trust and who can give it to you in a kind and helpful way.
